Over 100,000 American youth annually develop a psychotic brain illness. With its hallucinations, delusions, cognitive challenges and comorbid anxiety and depression, untreated psychosis can derail lives. However, research is showing that early treatment can make a world of difference. Since its beginning in the mid 1990s, One Mind has funded programs to help youth at risk for serious mental illness. On Brain Waves this week, Carrie Bearden, PhD, Director of CAPPS, a clinical research center at UCLA offering early treatment for youth at risk for psychosis or in their first episode regardless of ability to pay, talks about the One Mind-funded center’s innovative, evidence-based approaches to care.
