Peter Chiarelli Assumes Role of Ambassador and Board appoints Brandon Staglin, President

January 22, 2018, Rutherford, Napa Valley, CA – The Board of ONE MIND™ announced today that Peter Chiarelli, U.S. Army General (retired), will assume a new role as Ambassador to One Mind and step down as CEO effective January 19, 2018.  Concurrently, Brandon Staglin, current Board member of One Mind, will become President and relinquish his Board position.

In his new role, General Chiarelli will maintain an active role in the fundraising and progress of One Mind’s key programs in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS) research.  “We respect Pete Chiarelli’s decision to step down so he can spend more time at home and with his grandchildren,” said Garen Staglin on behalf of the Board of One Mind.  “We will miss Pete’s tireless dedication to the work of One Mind, especially in our support of TBI, PTS and other neurodegenerative disease research.  We are pleased that Pete has agreed to be an Ambassador to One Mind so he can continue his relationship with donors and involvement in our work in TBI and PTS research.  He has made major contributions to brain health disease research, become a global champion of “open science” and built a strong team at One Mind.  Along with Brandon and the Board, we will continue Pete’s important work and offer our sincere thanks to him,” added Staglin.

“It has been my honor to work with the Board, staff and donors of One Mind for almost six years,” said General Chiarelli.  “Without their support, we would have never made the amazing progress we have to identify and get FDA approval of biologically based biomarkers for TBI and begin building what is a historic collaboration between TRACK-TBI and AURORA for Post-Traumatic Stress.  As I get ready to leave the day-to-day leadership of the organization, I can assure you that I and One Mind remain fully committed to this important work,” added General Chiarelli.

One Mind Board of Directors also announced that total direct fund-raising for One Mind for 2017 exceeds $5.8 million.  In addition, the 23-year cumulative total, including direct contributions and leveraged funds provided to scientists, as a result of initial research funding from festival proceeds, has surpassed $280 million dollars since 1995. One Mind has become the nation’s leading private-public mental health organization dedicated to curing brain-related diseases, including depression, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury and bi-polar illness, focusing on issues including funding, research, advocacy, open science principles, and anti-stigma/discrimination.

“The support we continue to receive that funds important scientific discoveries is amazing,” stated Brandon Staglin.  “As we near a quarter of a century with this effort, we are beginning to see the breakthroughs that will make sense of brain disease and make a difference in so many lives.  I look forward to leading our team at One Mind together with our Board and distinguished Scientific Advisory Board to accelerate our progress to achieve our vision of healthy brains for all,” added Brandon Staglin.

One Mind is fortunate to have its research agenda guided by a distinguished Scientific Advisory Board (“SAB”), led by Co-Chairmen Eric Nestler Ph.D., Director of Mount Sinai Brain Institute and Steve Hyman, M.D., Director of the MIT-Broad Institute Stanley Center.  The Board of One Mind announced the SAB for the 2018 – 2021 term will include in addition to Nestler and Hyman the following scientists: Samuel Barondes (UCSF); Rob Malenka (Stanford); Raquel Gur [Penn]; Deanna Barch [Wash U]; Carrie Bearden [UCLA]; Rick Huganir (Johns Hopkins); and Geoff Manley (UCSF). “The guidance and insights provided by the SAB have been invaluable in allowing One Mind to achieve the results and impact on our research granting priorities,” said Eric Nestler. “We thank them for the dedication and commitment to One Mind,” added Nestler.

One Mind will continue all of its existing programs and priorities in 2018.  For more information visit www.onemind.org. “We believe our commitment to public-private partnerships, translational outcomes and “open science” collaboration has improved research effectiveness and allowed One Mind to leverage each contribution dollar.  We have the objective for each project to make the lives of people with a brain disease better today, not just research for research sake,“ said Patrick Kennedy, One Mind Board of Director Co-Chairman and One Mind Co-Founder.  “Brain disease is the biggest unmet medical need.  With support, we can find cures in our lifetimes and eliminate more than $3 trillion in global economic burden,” added Kennedy.
