By integrating engineering, neurotechnology, and AI, Dr. Shanechi’s lab is creating next-generation brain–machine interfaces that have redefined what’s possible in neurorehabilitation and psychiatric treatment.

Dr. Maryam Shanechi is the Alexander A. Sawchuk Chair and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Science at USC, where she also directs the Center for Neurotechnology and is a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program. She earned her Ph.D. from MIT and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and UC Berkeley before joining USC in 2014. Dr. Shanechi’s pioneering work at the intersection of neurotechnology, engineering, and machine learning has earned her major honors including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, NSF CAREER Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, and recognition from MIT Technology Review, Popular Science, and Science News. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a two-time Blavatnik National Awards Finalist.
