Defining the Gut-Brain Connection in Depression and Anxiety

Dr. Shriya Srinivasan is an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at Harvard University, where she develops enteric neural interfaces and ingestible bioelectronic devices for minimally invasive modulation of the nervous system. She directs the Biohybrid Organs and Neuroprosthetics (BIONICS) Lab, which integrates neuroengineering, bioelectronics, and reconstructive surgery to create interfaces with the peripheral and enteric nervous systems. Her work seeks to restore sensory and motor function, modulate physiology, and develop clinically accessible approaches to interfacing with neural circuits.

Srinivasan received her BS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and her PhD in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. Her doctoral work pioneered regenerative neuromuscular interfaces that enable prosthetic control using native neural signals. As a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and Schmidt Science Fellow, she subsequently developed ingestible bioelectronic systems for gastrointestinal neuromodulation.

Her honors include the Sloan Research Fellowship, the National Academy of Engineering’s Gilbreth Lectureship, the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, and the Delsys Prize. She has also been recognized by Forbes and MIT Technology Review and is the founder of Project Prana, a nonprofit advancing accessible medical technology.
