How Cognitive Training Improves Ability to Monitor Reality

Sophia Vinogradov Brain Scientist

Have you heard of the developing use of cognitive remediation techniques for schizophrenia sufferers? This type of “mental exercise” improves people’s ability to perform cognitive tasks such as remembering what is said to them or understanding the inflective meanings of spoken words, both of which can be difficult for people with schizophrenia. Now, Sophia Vinogradov, M.D., past One Mind funded scientist, is senior author of a paper just published in Neuron titled Computerized Cognitive Training Restores Neural Activity within the Reality Monitoring Network in Schizophrenia. Her team at UCSF and San Francisco VA Medical Center has discovered that their program of computerized exercises actually helps people with schizophrenia distinguish between internal experiences and outside reality.
