The 17th Annual Staglin Family Music Festival for Mental Health raised approximately $3.3 million for mental health research at its September 10th event. Additionally, leveraged funds raised as a result of the Festival’s research funding reached approximately $17.9 million in 2011, bringing the combined 17-year total in direct and leveraged funds to over $135 million. The Staglins also announced that their International Mental Health Research Organization (One Mind) has successfully launched the One Mind for Research Organization, partnering with former Congressman Patrick Kennedy to develop a 10-year plan to unlock the mysteries of the brain and causes of and cures for mental illness. One Mind has become the nation’s leading private-public mental health organization throughout the country, focusing on issues ranging from funding, research, and anti-stigma. Kennedy provided an update of the One Mind for Research campaign to the sold-out crowd. Music legend Dionne Warwick took to the stage and enticed guests to dance the afternoon on the intimate Staglin Music Festival stage.

“Hitting the $135 million mark and launching the One Mind for Research effort this year has given us another boost towards our goal of finding the answers to and cures for brain diseases,” said Garen Staglin. “We have terrific momentum and with the partnership of our outstanding scientists and researchers, we believe more than ever that these cures for brain diseases are possible in our lifetime,” Staglin added.

Steven Hyman, M.D., Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor opened the noon symposium with a presentation on the Time for a Collaborative Push to Defeat Brain Disorders. The Staglins then welcomed the 2011 Johnson & Johnson/One Mind Rising Star Award winner Ming-Hu Han, Ph.D., Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and 2011 One Mind Rising Star Award winner Lisa Monteggia, Ph.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The 2011 Rising Stars are selected from more than 150 applications. Each Rising Star recipient receives $250,000 to fund research for a specific grant research project.

After the symposium, guests retreated into the Staglin Family Vineyard wine caves where over 83 world-class wineries poured their finest vintages, paired with passed hors d’oeuvres by Chef Nancy Silverton of Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles. Exclusive wineries participating included Abreu, Colgin, Opus One, Harlan, Scarecrow, Shafer, Lewis, Bond, Staglin Family Vineyard and more.

Celebrity emcee, comedian and television star Bob Sarlatte welcomed music legend Dionne Warwick who performed many of her hits, including “Do You Know The Way To San Jose”, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”, “Alfie”, “What the World Needs Now”, and two duets with her son David Elliott – “I Say a Little Prayer for You” and “That’s What Friends Are For”. Warwick made a special appearance and thanked the attendees for supporting the cause at the post concert celebration, featuring a four-course dinner under the stars by renowned chef Michael Mina of Michael Mina in San Francisco.

Next year’s festival will be held on September 15, 2012 at the Staglin Family Vineyard, in Rutherford, CA.
