One Mind is led by General Pete Chiarelli, U.S. Army General (Retired) who as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army led the Department of Defense efforts on post-traumatic stress (PTS), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and suicide prevention. He is a retired General with almost 40 years of experience, and was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of One Mind in 2012.
As the 32nd Vice Chief of Staff in the Army, Chiarelli was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Army and its 1.1 million active and reserve soldiers. This included the oversight of many of the Army's R&D programs, and the implementation of recommendations related to its behavioral health programs, specifically its Health Promotion, Risk Reduction and Suicide Prevention Program.
As commander of the Multi-National Corps-Iraq, Chiarelli coordinated the actions of all four military services and was responsible for the day-to-day combat operations of more than 147,000 U.S. and Coalition troops. He was also the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates from March 2007 to August 2008. Chiarelli pioneered efforts to restore government, economic stability and essential services during two tours in Iraq; exercised command and control of combat operations; and trained, prepared and mobilized reserve forces for critical response operations. He retired from the Army in 2012.
In 2013, Chiarelli received the Patriot Award, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's highest honor for his work to help soldiers and families suffering from the invisible wounds of war.
Chiarelli holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Seattle University, a Master of Public Administration from the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategy from Salve Regina University. He is also a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff, and the National War College.
Janet Carbary joined One Mind in 2013 and is currently the Chief Financial Officer. She has a diverse background in organizational development, and financial planning within the healthcare industry. Janet has been an executive with experience as a CFO, COO and CEO. She holds 25 years of knowledge that includes for profit and not for profit healthcare, as well as system environments.
As CFO, Janet oversees all financial and administrative functions of One Mind. She is responsible for the accounting system, internal controls, contracts, and financial reporting. Janet coordinates and provides materials for the annual audit and tax return, while preparing and monitoring the budgets for operations and fundraising. She administers employee payroll and benefit programs, which include a retirement plan; and medical, dental and vision coverage plans. As a member of the executive committee she is also a partner in the development and implementation of the organization's strategy.
Janet started her career at Empire Health Services. She left after nine years to take a position with a new joint venture that was forming between two large competing systems in Texas. She has worked with many aspects of the healthcare delivery system included acute care, air ambulance, durable medical equipment, physician practices and clinical laboratories.
Prior to joining One Mind, Janet was the CFO/COO of Pacific Physician Lab. Janet holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Eastern Washington University and did her graduate studies at Gonzaga University.
Joan Demetriades is the Chief Strategy Officer and Gemini Program Director of One Mind. She brings extensive experience in pharmaceutical R&D strategy development, strategic leadership, portfolio planning, program & project management, organizational effectiveness, merger integration, bioanalytical chemistry and pharmacokinetics.
Joan's career spans executive and leadership positions at Janssen Pharmaceuticals R&D, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical R&D, AstraZeneca, Astra Merck, and Merck Research Labs.
Joan received a Masters of Business Administration from La Salle University and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Duquesne University.
Col. Dallas C. Hack (Ret.) assumed the role of Medical Leader for One Mind in 2015 as an expert consultant who will be working directly with Dr. Mona Hicks, One Mind’s Chief Scientific Officer. Together, they will represent One Mind to the scientific community, while exploring the opportunity for additional collaborations with researchers and organizations dedicated to finding better diagnostics and treatments for brain diseases and injuries.
From 2014 to 2015, Dr. Hack served as Senior Medical Advisor to the Principal Assistant, Research and Technology, US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) where he coordinated leading edge research focused on new techniques and products to save the lives and reduce morbidity of troops injured in the line of duty.
From 2008 to 2014, he served as the Director of the US Army Combat Casualty Care Research Program and the Chair, Joint Program Committee 6 (Combat Casualty Care). One of his major responsibilities was overseeing a portfolio of more than 500 projects directed at traumatic brain injury (TBI). He also was a key author of the 2013 National Research Action Plan, where he developed a strategic action plan to solve the fundamental problems in TBI, initiating major efforts across the continuum of care. The NCAA-DoD Grand Alliance was established under his leadership as the largest-ever study of concussion that will comprehensively evaluate the natural history of concussion. He also co-developed the Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (CENC), which is the largest-ever study of the long-term effects of TBI.
Dr. Hack worked in several Army command surgeon capacities through 2005, when he was selected to serve as a slated Faculty Instructor at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA from 2005 to 2008.
He has received numerous military awards including the Bronze Star, two Legions of Merit, and seven Meritorious Service Medals, and was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Military Order of Medical Merit. He was recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by his alma mater, Loma Linda University, in May 2015. He also has an appointment as Visiting Adjunct Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Hack is currently a part-time independent consultant for the NCAA and for the Brain Trauma Foundation, and has consulted with numerous organizations to advance research in Brain Health and transition the progress to improved clinical practice.
Dr. Hack completed his M.D. from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He worked in General Practice and Biomedical Engineering for nine years, serving as Vice President of Engineering for a number of biomedical companies. He then went into active duty, to accept a position in clinical research at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), and later completed a residency in General Preventive Medicine. He also holds a M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University, a M.S.S. from the US Army War College, and a C.P.E. from the Certifying Commission in Medical Management (CCMM).
Ramona Hicks assumed the role of Chief Scientific Officer for One Mind in 2014 to further develop, identify and manage collaborative opportunities for the acceleration of research and knowledge surrounding neurological and mental health research.
Over the past year she has coordinated a project that includes the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Center for Disease Control (CDC), National Football League (NFL), General Electric (GE), Department of Defense (DoD) and academic experts aimed at bringing a standardized concussion screening and decision support tool to emergency care centers throughout the U.S. Another focus has been to enhance the utility of the One Mind Portal as a bioinformatics platform for research across multiple disorders and projects. Dr. Hicks also serves on the Executive Committee of the International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research (InTBIR) initiative and is an Affiliate Professor in the Dept. of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington.
Before joining One Mind, Dr. Hicks was the Program Director for the Extramural Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research Program at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). In her role, she managed the traumatic brain injury (TBI) research portfolio and other activities, including creation of common data elements for TBI research, the Federal Interagency TBI Research Informatics System (FITBIR), the NIH-NFL Sports Health Research Program, the National Research Action Plan for TBI and PTSD, and the InTBIR Initiative.
Dr. Hicks grew up in Northern California, graduated from the University of California with a B.S. in Biology, and received a M.A. in Physical Therapy from Stanford University. Her early clinical experience as a physical therapist set the stage for a lifelong commitment to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat persons with neurological disorders. She returned to school and obtained a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Connecticut, followed by academic appointments at the University of Kentucky and the University of Washington.
As One Mind's Chief Intellectual Property and Policy Officer, Stephen works on policy issues and intellectual property strategies that drive One Mind's goals of hastening cures for patients through encouraging and enabling data sharing within and across disciplines, addressing barriers to data sharing on policy and technology levels, creating efficient public private partnerships to leverage public, private and philanthropic resources to advance research and cures, and focusing on incentives to innovation in neuroscience.
Before joining One Mind, Stephen had over 30 years of experience in intellectual property law at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he was a founding partner of its New York and San Francisco offices and the former head of its New York and San Francisco intellectual property groups. He began his career at Bird & Bird in London.
Stephen obtained a degree in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from Cambridge University in England, and graduated from law schools in London and Chicago.
Jeffrey Grethe came on board as the Program Director for the One Mind Portal in 2014. He manages the development of the portal and works with domain scientists, large-scale research initiatives, and the open source community to ensure that the portal will help to accelerate research by providing neurological and mental health researchers a data sharing and analytics platform.
While overseeing the One Mind Portal, Dr. Grethe also serves as a Principal Investigator for a number of large-scale data initiatives, such as the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) and the NIDDK Information Network (dkNET) within the Center for Research in Biological Systems (CRBS) at the University of California, San Diego.
He has more than 20 years of experience in enabling collaborative research, data sharing and discovery through the application of advanced informatics approaches. His career began at the University of Southern California with his involvement in the Human Brain Project. Dr. Grethe went on to set up the first open repository for Functional MRI data at Dartmouth. His efforts continue today with his work on NIF, dkNET and with standards bodies such as the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility.
Following a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Grethe received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience with a focus on Neuroinformatics and Computational Modeling from the University of Southern California.
Jamie Hanley joined One Mind in 2015 to fill the role of Administrative Support. In addition to a wide range of day-to-day responsibilities, she also supports members of the executive staff and management team. With her, she brings over 20 years of office administration and customer service experience.
Jamie has spent the majority of her career working in the real estate industry, both in office administration, assisting 90+ realtors and management, and in sales at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices (formerly Prudential Real Estate).
Prior to real estate, Jamie worked at Nordstrom for five years providing excellent customer service. Her experiences are what made anticipating and facilitating the needs of her real estate agents come naturally.
By exuding a calm demeanor, eagerness to learn, and sense of humor Jamie has made her industry transition both exciting and seamless.
Jamie grew up in the Seattle area where her interest in sports and being active first began. She pursued her passion for volleyball at Central Washington University. Her time away from the office is spent with her daughter, Enna. Together they enjoy a variety of activities and adventures; but mostly, they just enjoy each other’s company.
Andrew Hochberg joined One Mind in 2015 as the One Mind Portal Technical Help Desk Support, developing & applying the technical support structure for the Portal. His main responsibilities are providing technical support for end users and ensuring that feedback from users is integral to Portal development.
Prior to joining One Mind, Andrew provided technical support for clinical operations in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, including Novartis, Abbott Vascular, Genentech and Roche Canada. He has also applied similar skills at Apple in Cupertino, California.
He has over 10 years of experience in IT, providing Tiers I-III technical support, knowledge base documentation, and technical training.
Andrew holds PMP certification and a B.A. in Japanese from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He grew up in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and lives with his husband & cat in Issaquah, Washington.
Erik Montes joined One Mind in late 2013 as a Developer, to assist with the build of the One Mind Portal. His main roles include, but are not limited to, user interface design, usability, and front-end functionality.
Before coming on board, Erik lived in Fresno, California where he attended graduate school and worked for a large quantitative research company called Decipher as a software engineer. In his role, he was responsible for design, usability, and front-end functionality.
Erik has over 10 years of experience in building web applications. He likes to give back to the software community by contributing to several open source software projects, such as jquery.placeholder and web2py.
Erik grew up in central California. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from California State University, Fresno.
Garett Slettebak joined One Mind in 2016 and currently serves as the Director of Marketing and Communications. With over 13 years of marketing leadership experience, Garett is excited to apply his skills and marketing savvy to help raise awareness for One Mind, its industry, and its targeted initiatives.
Before One Mind, Garett served for more than a decade as the Director of Marketing for a Seattle based event management and marketing firm where he led the community focused marketing strategies and outreach activities for the organization and their portfolio of annually held sporting events and festivals that supported many Seattle area non-profit organizations. Prior to that, Garett worked in telecom, international trade and even spent a summer giving tours at the Puget Sound region’s most notable winery.
Garett came to One Mind with a personal connection to the cause and with knowledge of how influential successes in brain related research and outreach can positively impact society.
Garett holds an MBA from the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business and a BA in Economics from the University of Washington as well. When he is not working, Garett spends most of his time with his young son, newborn daughter and wife. Born and raised in Seattle, Garett takes great pride in Seattle’s history, its access to the outdoors and its newfound growth. Garett is a life-long soccer player and passionate fan of the Seattle Sounders FC as well as many of the other Seattle area sports teams.
Nancy started with One Mind in April of 2012 as the Executive Support for General Peter Chiarelli (Ret.), along with serving as the Office Manager. In her support role, she administers his busy work life, ever-changing calendar and extensive travel schedule. With 35+ years of office administrative experience, Nancy also keeps the office running and provides administrative support to other members of the executive and management team.
Prior to One Mind, Nancy worked in Human Resources, however, spent most of her career in the global shipping industry managing sales and cargo logistics for diverse accounts such as Starbucks, Brooks Sports, Philips Medical, Dole Foods, Nestle, Disney and Sony.
Her adventures have taken her up and down the west coast - starting in Seattle, moving to Los Angeles, then San Francisco, and back to Seattle. She has also had great experiences throughout Asia and Europe.
Nancy grew up in the Seattle area. She loves music, hiking and boxing. She also has a passion for water sports, such as kayaking, paddleboards and rowing. When Nancy is away from the office, she and her husband enjoy the beaches of Hawaii, golfing, and trips to Walla Walla, WA.
